  • Specialty Box Office: ‘Moonrise Kingdom’ Topples Record; ‘Intouchables’ Strong
After two weeks of unimpressive specialty openers, Focus Features’ Moonrise Kingdom has taken the specialty box office by storm, shattering records over Memorial weekend. Directed by Wes Anderson, the film opened the Cannes Film Festival and then hit theaters in the States, setting a new record for a live-action feature in a regular theatrical run, surpassing Dreamgirls‘ stunning $126K per theater average debut in three theaters back in 2006. Moonrise Kingdom averaged a whopping $130,752 at four locations and an overall four-day $669K gross. Focus, which holds worldwide rights, will take the movie to additional cities in the U.S. each weekend through June, expanding Moonrise Kingdom to several hundred screens. “Moonrise is a story of love’s improbable triumph, and for Wes Anderson and his team a labor of love from start to finish,” said Focus CEO James Schamus. “How wonderful it is to congratulate him, on behalf of everyone at Focus, for this remarkable, record-breaking opening.” Also opening with gusto, The Weinstein Company’s The Intouchables, which averaged over $34K in four theaters. This should bode well for the Belgian-produced film. It has had a spectacular run overseas, breaking records in France and grossing well over $300 million to date. Among other Memorial Day weekend specialty debuts, Samuel Goldwyn’s Cowgirls n’ Angels screened in 50 theaters, averaging a disappointing $1,314, while Adopt Films launched Mighty ... Read More »
  • eOne Confirms Talks To Purchase Alliance
Entertainment One confirmed today that the distributor has held negotiations about purchasing Alliance Films, as Deadline reported last week from the Cannes Film Festival. Both companies had remained publicly mum about the negotiations but eOne said today it wanted to comment because of market speculation, according to the Toronto Globe and Mail. Both companies are Canadian-based. Alliance is owned by Goldman Sachs. “The board confirms it has held discussions with the shareholders of Alliance Films but there can be no certainty this will lead to a transaction,” eOne said in statement. “The company would only undertake such a transaction on acceptable terms, and on the basis that the directors believe it would be financially and strategically value enhancing for the company and its shareholders.” If a deal were to come to pass, eEon said it would finance the transaction with a combination of debt and equity. The statement about Alliance came as eOne reported earnings for last fiscal year. The company said profit before taxes increased 103% to $37 million with revenue up 7% to $809 million. Much of the revenue was from The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2, to which it owns Canadian rights. Purchasing Alliance would give eOne Canadian rights to 11,000 titles including The Hunger Games. Alliance also owns 50% of the CSI: Crime Scene Investigation TV franchise, which Goldman doesn’t intend ... Read More »
  • Tony Blair: It Would Be Strange If Politicians Didn’t Have Relationships With Big Media
In a moment reminiscent of last year’s shaving-cream pie attack on Rupert Murdoch at a Parliamentary committee hearing, an unwelcome guest infiltrated the Leveson Inquiry into UK media ethics today. This time, it was former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair testifying and the attack was a verbal one. An antiwar protester burst in shouting, “The man is a war criminal!” before being forcibly removed. Blair, who supported the U.S. invasion of Iraq in 2003, and who told the inquiry there was nothing odd about speaking with Murdoch three times before the war, was unruffled. Related: UK Editor Arrested In News Corp Scandal Earlier in the day, Blair said that as a politician, running afoul of a media group “means you are then effectively blocked from getting your message across.” Blair gave evidence as to his relationship with Rupert Murdoch and the relationship of politicians and the media in general. He avidly courted the News Corp chief from his early days as head of the Labour Party. After Blair paid a visit to Australia in 1995 in what he said was a “very deliberate and very strategic” move to curry favor, Murdoch famously said, “I suspect we’ll end up making love like two porcupines - very carefully.” Murdoch’s Sun newspaper backed Blair in all of his runs at office. • Geek Gifts: THE DARK KNIGHT RISES-Themed Nokia Lumia 900 Phone
In case you’re not worn out from our multitude of The Dark Knight Rises-related stories on this fine Memorial Day, we’ve got one more Batman story to add to the pile. Nokia is apparently planning to launch a Batman-imprinted Lumia 900 phone in anticipation of the release of Christopher Nolan's last Batman pic. The device comes with a laser-etched Batman logo on the back of the phone, so you can sport your Batpride day-in and day-out. This actually isn’t the first Dark Knight Rises tie-in from Nokia, as they also released a Batman-themed version of the Lumia 800 last year. Per Mashable, the price and exact date of availability for the 900 are unknown, but the phone is expected to hit the UK, Germany, France and other European markets “in the coming weeks.” Hit the jump to take a look at the phone and to check out the Batman-themed Lumia 800. Big thanks to reader Nathaniel for the heads up. The announcement was made via Nokia’s Twitter, which then posted the following image. And here’s a look at the Lumia 800:
  • First Image from David Fincher’s Netflix Series HOUSE OF CARDS Starring Kevin Spacey
The first image from director David Fincher’s upcoming Netflix series House of Cards is now online. The show is based on the British miniseries of the same name and stars Kevin Spacey as a “wily, murderous politician worming his way to the White House” in Washington D.C. Fincher is directing the pilot, and Netflix has committed to producing and airing two seasons of 13 episodes each that will stream through the subscription service. Fincher seems a perfect fit to tackle the dirty game of politics, and the series reteams him the director with Spacey and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo star Robin Wright. A specific airdate has yet to be announced, but the series is set to be unveiled sometime in 2013. Hit the jump to check out the first image of Spacey and Wright in what the former calls, “[not] your daddy’s West Wing.” Image via EW.
  • First Official Images from Sofia Coppola’s THE BLING RING Starring Emma Watson
The first official images from writer/director Sofia Coppola’s new film The Bling Ring has been unveiled. The pic is based on the true story of a group of teenagers who robbed the homes of the rich and famous between October 2008 and August 2009, coming away with over $3 million worth of loot from the likes of Paris Hilton, Orlando Bloom, and Lindsay Lohan. The cast is lead by Harry Potter’s Emma Watson and, based on these images, her character looks to be just about as far from Hermione Granger as possible. We also get a look at co-stars Taissa Famiga (American Horror Story), Israel Broussard (Flipped), Katie Chang and Claire Julien. We previously saw a couple of batches of set photos, but these official images shows the whole Bling Ring gang all together, frappuccinos in tow. Hit the jump to check out the image. The cast also includes Leslie Mann. Images courtesy of EW and I Heart Watson (via The Playlist).

  • Jaguars, Joan Harris and Other Unattainable Objects on 'Mad Men'
"Mad Men" has used its perch as a vantage point to look at changes in how we behave, to engage in seismic shifts in marriage, parenting, pop culture and the workplace (while skirting others, like race). But foremost, for me, it's always been a show about gender, using the way we were half a century ago to examine how much has changed between and for men and women and how much really hasn't. The show gets a lot of mileage out of the regressiveness of its sexual politics, from Ken (Aaron Staton) tackling a secretary at an office party to check the color of her panties to Roger (John Slattery) riding a girl like a pony during a debaucherous night out to Freddy (Joel Murray) saying of Peggy's (Elisabeth Moss) first tries at taglines that "it was like watching a dog play the piano" (all examples from the first season -- things have been toned down considerably). But it also gets a little thrill out of them too, out of the dominance of old-school...

  • Specialty Box Office: 'Kingdom' Comes With Record-Breaking Debut; 'Intouchables' Also Strong
The specialty box office was heated this Memorial Day weekend, with Wes Anderson's "Moonrise Kingdom" breaking the record for the best limited indie debut of all time. That news overshadowed another strong debut -- Olivier Nakache and Éric Toledano's "The Intouchables" -- as well as potent expansion numbers from John Madden's "The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel" and Richard Linklater's "Bernie." Check out the full rundown below. The Debuts: "Moonrise Kingdom" (Focus Features) Focus Features-released "Moonrise Kingdom" grossed a stunning $508,870 from just four theaters over the three-day frame, averaging $127,218. That allowed the film to top the $126,317 that "Dreamgirls" averaged in 2006 (the record for a live-action film), as well as the $109,485 "Brokeback Mountain" averaged back in 2005 (the record for an indie film), giving it the best per-theater-average of...
